Join us to explore the excavations of Sheffield Castle and tour the site. This is a unique opportunity to see a live archaeological dig and learn about Sheffield’s history. Archaeologists will be on hand to showcase and chat through their latest findings.

This event is outdoors. Please dress appropriately and wear sturdy footwear. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Due to the nature of the site, there are uneven surfaces throughout. If you have specific access needs, please contact us prior to your visit.

Handling collection at the Festival of Archaeology event

Wessex Archaeology are pleased to support the Festival of Archaeology at Salisbury Museum once again this July 2024. 

Amongst many fun and fascinating stands, the Wessex event area will give visitors an opportunity to meet experienced archaeologists, try out environmental archaeology and try our 3D Virtual Reality headsets.

We will also be hosting exciting living history demonstrations run by the Ancient Wessex Network and flintknapping demonstrations with Phil Harding throughout the day.

On Sunday 28th July, visitors will also have the opportunity to attend a talk led by Matt Leivers on connected landscapes within the wider Stonehenge World Heritage Site landscape.

On Sunday 28th July, join archaeologist Matt Leivers for a talk exploring the fascinating connected landscapes within the wider Stonehenge World Heritage Site landscape.

Recent work in the Stonehenge landscape has cast new light on everyone’s favourite archaeological mystery – what was Stonehenge for? This talk will present the results of some of that work, and the new understandings of Britain’s most famous Neolithic site and it’s surroundings it has allowed us to develop.

Join the experts from Wessex Archaeology at Amesbury History Centre for a series of free archaeology activities for all ages as part of this years’ Festival of Archaeology. There will be opportunities to get hands on with artefacts, have a go at environmental sampling with soil and magnifying glasses and try out our 3D Virtual Reality headsets. Our experienced archaeologists will also be joining us as they share their expert knowledge and offer insights into some of our local projects.
